First Open House of 2007
Brings Victory Flight to the Skies

What better way to enjoy a beautiful Saturday afternoon than to spend it walking amongst airplanes that you spent your childhood building Matchbox models of! This is what a Vintage Wings of Canada Open House is all about… and more.

June 2, was the first Vintage Wings Open House of the season and it was a fantastic way to start off what promises to be a great summer for both hardened and budding aviation enthusiasts. This was a very special event for a number of reasons – one of the biggest was the first public showing of the collection’s latest acquisition… the Vought F4U-4 Corsair.

The sight, sound and smell (!) of the Corsair and its big Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine starting up were a real crowd pleaser that day as it took to the air a few times during the day for practice at the hands of three different pilots, one of them on his first solo in the monstrous bent wing bird.

Proving that Vintage Wings is more than just airplanes, Canadian WWII ace, ‘Stocky’ Edwards made an appearance along with a video crew from Vancouver working on a documentary about him, as did Vintage Wings regular Chris Preston who is always willing to entertain and educate anyone willing to listen with tales of his days flying the Spitfire.

The de Havilland Fox Moth went up on its second flight since joining VWC was another treat to see take to the air from the grass beside the runway in Gatineau. Seeing and hearing that beautiful bird take wing brought everyone back to the golden age of biplane aviation.

The Vintage Wings Victory Flight comprised of the newly acquired F4U-4 Corsair, the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire had it’s first formation practice flight on the day. This sight gave everyone goosebumps and will be a fantastic thing to see again later this year with all 4 aircraft in the air. The fourth member of the flight, the P-51 Mustang was a hangar queen while its Merlin was being worked on.

We hope to see you at the next event July 7. Make sure your memory cards are empty (or you have lots of that thing called film) because there will always be something happening, on the ground or in the air.

Oh, and don’t forget to put that 30 weight sunblock on the BACK of your knees as well… trust us
